I’m not a film buff; I’ve only recently started watching films. The first film I watched in a long time was ‘The Devil Wears Prada.’ It provided me with very high-quality moments; fashion, work-life balance, and human perspectives… Everything was exactly what I was looking for in a film. For this reason, I wanted to tell you a little bit about this film
Andrea, our main character, begins her role as an assistant to Miranda, a renowned fashion icon, despite neither knowing Miranda nor having any interest in fashion. Our story commences with Andrea’s hiring.
In the early days, Andrea, who does not adhere to the prevailing fashion trends, faces criticism and pressure from her colleagues. Despite her efforts, she fails to gain their approval, and following a minor altercation with Miranda, she decides to change her way of thinking and her determined career journey begins here. Andrea, who reshapes herself with ambition, climbs the ladder of success within the company with determination. Still, she starts to neglect her relationship with her boyfriend and for this reason, they break up near the end of the film.
In the film’s last scenes, Andrea goes to Paris for a fashion show, realizes that she doesn’t want to be like Miranda, throws away her phone, quits her job, and goes to a new job interview in her old clothes.
The scene that impressed me the most was the closing scene. Looking at the overall process, it was excellent how they portrayed human relationships realistically, steering clear of gender stereotypes. It also felt very gratifying to see that the film acknowledged it is normal to make mistakes, no matter how hard we try in life. Mistakes are a tool for us to gain experience, and this idea was clearly illustrated in the film.
In the last scene of the film, Andrea goes to a job interview and the interviewer tells her that he is contacting Miranda because he is curious about the reason why she was so short in her last job. Andrea waits patiently but nervously to find out what Miranda said. Miranda says “That of all the assistants that she’s ever had her were by far our biggest disappointment and if you don’t hire her, you’re an idiot.”
I think this quote reflects loyalty and appreciation to us in a very good way. At the end of the film, we see that all these experiences are worth it and that she can sail to new experiences with the experiences she has gained from her mistakes.
I hope we also see our mistakes and gain experience from them because life is too short to be blind to ourselves.
